Washer in hidden tang?

In the back of the handle I cut a deep counter-bore to hold an 8-32 capscrew in place.There is a washer between the wood and the screw. It is not a take-down knife so eventually there'll be epoxy around the screw and pretty much everywhere inside. My clearance hole is pretty close to the od of the screw. The few times I have assembled my prototype without the washer it is a very positive stop...as in the cap screw head is not burying into the wood easily... I would have to tighten it up tighter than i would to assemble it for that to happen.

This will always be an epoxied blade. At some point I may even use stabilized wood...

Does anyone think the washer is necessary?...all opinions welcome.
 
I agree with John. I use corby bolts for most handles. They have a 3/16” shank and 1/4” head, tightened against wood handles with no problems.

When I asked this I was 3 hrs away from being admitted to the hospital for a severe foot infection. The doc as he was grilling me about what happened said I was "obviously having symptoms of confusion" another indicator of out of control infection.

I read what i wrote that day thinking "Duhhh!".....realizing the angst was confusion not lack of decision making ability....4 days and many bags of IV antibiotics later the question seems silly...

Whew. Hope you continue to improve. Sounds like it was a blessing you got to the hospital.
