    Wrapping SS for HT

I wrap all my stainless material to prevent decarb. Those get plate quenched. I believe you can oil quench stainless steels but the aluminum plates work well and they help to prevent warping. I don't wrap simple carbon steel. My ( possibly incorrect ) reason is that those steels must be...

    Pin location? WNIP

I have found that when I start having problems with grinding, the best thing to do is go get a fresh belt. Maybe it's the three minute break, maybe it's refocusing my thoughts, maybe it's the fresh abrasive, but things almost always get better.

For those of you that keep a Knife Making or Shop Log

I don't keep a detailed shop log, but I do record my heat treating procedures and what the results are in terms of HRC numbers and amount of warping I get. I also take pictures of most finished knives. Mistakes seem more apparent in a picture, and it usually makes me feel better if I can...

What's going on in your shop?

Here's three I just finished up today. Fit and finish not yet up to where I want to be, but this seems to be the best I can do right now. After a certain point I seem to keep going around in circles trying to fix stuff but not really making a lot of progress. Like playing whack-a-mole. Still...

    Red Label Abrasives

I tried ten of them a while back. They didn't last as well as I expected and I went back to Trizact belts for the higher grits.

Heat Treated Stainless Steel for stock-removal kitchen knife

I have used Peters, but to make it cost effective you need about 20 blades or more. I also have had very good results with JT at https://www.jarodtodd.com/. He will do just a few blades and does a very good job. Never tried Texas Knifemakers Supply for heat treating but have heard good things...

Heat Treated Stainless Steel for stock-removal kitchen knife

Sean is correct. If I were you I would get some AEB-L, which is popular right now, or an old standby like 440c. Both of those make great knives. I would stay away from the more exotic alloys while you are learning. Profile them, drill your holes, and get a pro to do the heat treating. You can...

Heat Treated Stainless Steel for stock-removal kitchen knife

Why don't you use the stainless of your choice and just send out the blades for heat treating? I don't think you will be able to properly heat treat any type of stainless in your forge.

    Cryogenic quenching question

As far as cryo treating various types of steel, here is a link to the first of three articles written by Larrin Thomas on this subject: Everything I have read by Larrin is backed up by solid research. https://knifesteelnerds.com/2018/12/03/cryogenic-part1/ As most of us know, he has many other...
