John nailed it. The blade is actually 1 of 3 I ground not too long after starting out. The first one i burned up grinding to fast after heat treat the second one was lost in the guard fitting fiasco of 2017. I traced the blade and designed the handle around it.

This will hopefully be my first hidden tang hunter. The knife it self is larger then I usually make 4-1/4" blade with a 4-5/8" handle. It might be be a little much for my current skill set. I plan to have it finished for the ABS Intro to Bladesmithing class at the end of February. All input is...

I don't envy you. Still looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

That is a big knife sir. I tried 3 times to design a drop point skinner with a 6 inch blade based on your drawing. Now my brain hurts.... third attempt. Thanks for making me think outside the box.

I'm putting the other Hunter on hold. I obviously put the clay on too thin. The debate is the tip is already thin with a slight warp, even if I fix the warp by the time I grind the decarb off, a warp will almost be unavoidable. I don't mind fixing warps but a thin knife can warp bad enough it...

    Question on belts

I like the VSM belts, there are 2 different models. The XK885Y is for high speed, heavy pressure grinding, and XK760X is more of standard type ceramic belt. Tru-grit is starting to carry Hermes ceramic belts, I ordered some of the 220 grit to experiment with, and have been real happy.

So I can't forget to thank my newest shop helper. He's somewhat goofy and would rather bark at deer then do the tedious work. He's not impressed with the mess of hand sanding, but he puts up with it for treats.

Ok so I had some grinding issues today. Mainly I was struggling getting a good grind. After getting that all straightened out the hamon was not jumping out like they normally do. I obviously didn't get the clay as thick as I should have. This one's already at 14 thousands edge thickness so it...

So I'm actually going to work on these today! I'll try to post pictures as I go, it will only be one knife with same process for both. I start with a 120 grit ceramic belt and focus on fixing any small issues with blade. For me grinding is an art in constant correction, not getting the perfect...

I like the way it looks, simple and clean. The hump for the finger choil might push your fingers back towards the heel some, making the handle feel shorter then it is. Make a template and see how it feels. Some times it looks good on paper but in real life it is uncomfortable. Here's one I...

Thanks Kevin it's moving slower than I want, but I'm enjoying it. For new makers reading this thread most of my knowledge has been gained from this forum, YouTube, and friendly makers that will respond to my texts no matter how stupid the questions. I'm still inexperienced with around 30...

I hear Bruce Bumps is very nice. Mine was made by Bill Behnke, I plan on buying another from him soon.

3 strips! Save some money and cut them a 1/4" wider then the blade. I too have been enjoying the sanding blocks.

This morning I glued the scales to the liner material. More uses for the marble tiles. I think they were $5 for 6 tiles, they are fairly flat and made flattening handle material, and other miscellaneous things way easier when I was first starting out. Now I'm just used too using them. I use...

    Diamond Files?

Get some elbow grease and 120 grit sand paper. Sand until your hands go numb. Take a break, start again. It gets easier with every knife you make.:)
