What's going on in your shop?

A year or so ago I traded Howard Clark for some small sets of ivory scales. I rounded over the bolsters .060", half the thickness of the material. I'll engrave the bolsters when it's nearly done. Now I have to match the contour with the ivory. It's all hand sanding to get the contours in...

What's going on in your shop?

After taking the summer off from knife making to concentrate on fishing.... I am back at it since the boat is winterized and the lake isn't frozen yet. Below is a scale release auto in progress. The green g10 chunk screwed to where the scale goes is simply something to give me a grip. I had...

End Mill for Bearing Pockets in Ti

I have done it 4 ways: plunge an end mill after locating it (using a rod to locate it), a rotary table, an annular cutter (spot weld cutter) and a counterbore. For a liner lock, I use a counterbore and hand drill it mostly now. I do have a Z axis on my mini mill to get the depth. I usually shoot...

What's going on in your shop?

30 years ago I dabbled in chainsaw and traditional carving. Just recently I have decided to get back into carving but more whimsical relief and caricature whittling. Naturally I thought I better make the tools. Here are some small blades for whittle type knives. This 15n20 in .060” thickness...

What's going on in your shop?

Not knife making but I still have a project left to do on the plasma cutter. These will be for some stair rails and wall hangings in my garage. You all need to fish more - no matter how much you fish now. Back to knife making next week after several months doing other things.

    Makers Mark Stencils Comparison

good comparison. I'd suggest also looking at how many impressions you can get before the screen becomes too clogged or the stencil is raggedy. I use neutralizer to clean a used stencil. Rub it vigorously (both sides) with a paper towel onto another paper towel. I also use windex as a final clean.

the Midwest Knifemakers Guild hosted a Hammer In at USAknifemaker this weekend. 2 things to consider if you haven’t. 1. Join a knifemakers group. You make friends that actually listen when you talk about knives as opposed to your wife and normal friends. 2. Go to Hammer In’s. You will...

Where To Get New Logo And Stencils

    Smoking deal on belts.

A long time ago this was a grail issue to be solved by the community. Many guys tried and failed, including me. It was decided that nothing worked well and that is where it was abandoned. It keeps coming up every so often and I have still not seen something that works. There could be something...

    What about stonewash finish

I have a Burr King vibe bowl with fancy ceramic stones. I also have a cheap PVC pipe rock tumbler filled with gravel that does a great job, maybe better than the vibe bowl. Add water a small amount of soap when tumbling.

I get asked by non-knife people what is the best way to sharpen their kitchen knives. Usually what they mean is will I sharpen their knives? I tell everyone I have a one time free sharpening service going on right now. I’ll sharpen their knives once for no charge and turn down any offers of...
