The 4800 would definately be a brighter contrast. The 1084 would only be a little different.

Sleep ZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ I always start my anneal cycles late and let that happen when I'm sleeping, Then when I wake up the blades (or damascus barstock) are annealed, and I can proceed.

Look into the 3m trizact cf belts. They are only good for metals, but the are great. They run cooler and longer than any belt I have used in 23 years.

I havn't used anything other than a platen for over 10 years. Its a very personal choice, as bad as boxers or briefs.

I hate to say this, because its really not encouragement, but doing things off the cuff has always been a strong point for me. Look at some pics and try to get some ideas.

Naa, you don't want to start forging where you're at:D at least it cools off here ocassionally, and little bit of hard water fall from the clouds. Just give me a call if you need some.

I was in the same boat about 10 years ago, and I switched to O-1 and havn't looked back since. From my observations O-1 rates 10-15% better at cutting and edgeholding when properly heat treated. A little bit of tungsten goes along way. I made a knife for my father, who is a professional...
