Just finished up two more Entry Tools. I had Dave cut me 6 blanks from my first blade design and it was off from there!!!

The Random Urban Desert variant is going to one of our troops. He will be taking it with him back to the sand box in October. I am working on a K-Bit as a gift to take with him as well.

The other one is Black paper micarta.



The handle material on his is Todds Random Urban Desert micarta. I still have to oil them down a bit. I am still learning, but seem to get a little better with every shot. My biggest problem is my grinder stalling out half way through each pass...VERY frustrating learning curve. But, I have a new grinder coming soon, Thanks, Tracy2thumbs:D .....also having a friend of the family to come wire me up with 230V. I cant wait.

Thank you, Billy. I hope I can present an artsy knife for you guys one of these years. For now, I am focusing on Military and LEO. So much more to learn, but I am still having a blast...even with my stalled out grinder....LOL

I dont make them pretty for a couple reasons:

1. I am not at that level yet and I really like an ugly blade you wont worry about beating to hell.2thumbs

2. You guys are going to put in some work with them anyway.....hahaha

My buddy just left Fort Polk a couple years back....They have a good outdoor range there. Other than that....I cant help ya. I suppose you can save some cash being out there in the boonies:D That will get you more knife-making goodies brother.

Chris Make what you like, its not as much fun if you make stuff you dont like. You can make what you like the most, and on the days when you need a break you try something new. That way your still making knives and learning along the way.I do ten knives and I set the next one aside to expermint with ,some times it turns out nice and sometimes It dosent.But I have fun you will to.
 
I hear ya, Billy. One day soon I am going to have some time....crossing fingers,,,to really dream up a stunner. I want to be able to make blades to put up on a mantle or go to someone who is an avid high end collector. But, for now....."Ugly knives for ugly times" is my slogan...LOL And I am having fun doing it all.

And for the record...I have a pile of "Experimental Pieces" That did not make the cut so to speak...hope I can salvage them down the road. If not....I will save them for when my son is old enough and let him figure it out...LOL

Its not my grinder.....Its the power I have running the grinder is my problem...LOL I have long extension cords running my motor. When I had a bigger extension cord I wouldnt bog it down as much but would trip my breaker.

I just accepted it for what it is....I will be hooked up right here soon.

Those look cool, Chris. I like the idea of the textured micarta...I'll have to give that a whirl sometime.

Do the holes in the blade serve a function, or are they just for aesthetic purposes?

The main purpose is weight reduction. But I am really just drawn to holes I guess....LOL When I made the first one I drilled out holes along the spine and it really lightened up the blade. So, I sketched up a few different options and sent them to Dave and he cut me up.

I am sure there are better ways to do the texturing....I just tracked the belt off the contact wheel and went at it. Far from a perfect finish...but with practice I will get better.

Those holes look cool, but do you think they could compromise strength at all? (I hate to admit it, but I'm not really even sure what an Entry tool is...I assume something to wedge and pry open doors, etc.?)

I seem to recall seeing a tutorial someplace where a contact wheel or small wheel was used to texture micarta (maybe it was here in the tutorial section?) I'll see if I can find it, and if so, post the link for you...

Yes it is designed to act as a pry-bay, chopper and or a slicer. Possibly even a shovel if you needed to....LOL

I highly doubt the holes will effect the integrity of the design/purpose. Possibly if you tried snapping it, I am sure that is possible. But for most applications I do not see it posing a problem. I guess we will see.....I will be the first to eat my words if one ever does fail:eek:

I will do a search on the textured handles...I know Bill Coye and Martin Olexey use the small wheels and or spindle sanders. I just looked down and though, well.....lets give it a try!

Thanks fellas! I am trying to free hand more and not use the clamp I got from Fred. But, it is tough to get them plunges to line up right without it. More practice for me2thumbs There getting better though.

Working on a few choppers next, and several more like my wives. Still gotta finish up a couple Damascus pieces and get started on the next batch in 0-12thumbs2thumbs
