You are spot on with that comment! It was amazing how easy it was to dial them in. I think this was in the $50-$75 price range. I can only imagine what a professional vise would do and feel like.

What brand is it. I looked at the HF ones and did not like how sloppy they were.and the good ones I can't afford! LOL!!
 
You see this is just wat I am talking about you get all the good stuff :) Later down the road I wouldn't mind getting one of those.
 
I have the Harbor Freight 4" version. I believe I paid about $50 for. I've used it a couple times but it does not work well at all for any precision work. It's way too sloppy even after attempting to trim the play out.

I might just spring for one of these while they are on sale. 3 inches is big enough for almost all knife work
 
Recieved mine yesterday for what I paid for this it seems very well made!! It didn't have any directions in the box.not that it needed them it was pretty intuitive to assemble. Now just some cheap parallels and I'll be set!

I have really enjoyed using mine. It makes locating and drilling pin holes so much easier. Safer to!

I have one from Grizzly and while it works, it was not precise. Knowing how to tinker with things I noted where the slop was and tore it apart and shimmed the areas of slop. It is much better but, like I always say you have to pay for precision!

Now I know why the expensive ones are expensive!!! Never tried the Wilton but there stuff is usually quality!!

You could use a mag base with a travel indicator on it. One for X and one for Y. That will put you in the ballpark. It would help if you put a indicator in the spindle of your drill press. Run X back and forth. Tap it straight to the back jaw of the vise. Done deal. :)

Cool idea. I'll have to give it a try.
 
I haven't bought it, but was told that Northern Tool has one that is supposed to be of decent quality, and I believe it is a little cheaper than the Wilton.
 
Casey, refer to my earlier post. Wait a month or so but put back the money to buy the best!! Not saying Wilton is the best but you will never make a mistake when buying the quality one when it comes to something like this.

In my case I was able to help the poor quality but, even at that it will never be quality! Something you want to look for is the movement clunky or sloppy. Another thing are you able to lock it off at a given setting. I have actually watched mine move from the vibration of the drill press while I am drilling a hole. If that happens there is no way you can repeat a specific setting!! Believe me when you are at that moment of making a masterpiece and the adjustment knob turns and you mess it up! You are going to wish you had spent the money for the best!!
