    Aebl toughness?

Ht'd some aebl for the first time. I ground before ht, and thought it wasn't holding an edge as well add i hoped it would. I stabbed some mdf and then pressed the edge on a copper rod. Kablewie! How tough should this stuff be? I followed a ht recipe from this forum exactly...

    One for my brother...

I know not every knife has a story, but this one does. About 7 years ago my Mother passed away from cancer. About that time my brother and I really stopped talking. For lots of reasons, most pretty lame, but it happened. About a month ago, I got a message from him asking about how much one...

    Stubby skinner

This is a short little skinner. It's got stabilized buckeye burl and brass components. The blade is w2 with a cool little hamon. Also, so far, my favorite kydex sheath. Hopefully it'll get to skin an elk soon! Sent from my D6708 using Tapatalk

A letter opener for that uncle who has everything....

So, I have a Great Uncle who is turning 89 this week. He literally has everything. But, I thought, why not make him something semi-sharp? So, here is my first letter opener, other than ruined blades that I just ground down... It was a letter opener from beginning to finish. Its 1095, and I...

    help with 440c and cm154

I just heat treated a 440c and then a cm154 blade. Reset the furnace in between, etc. Here is the 440c. You can see the color change along the blade. I took it to 1400 for 10 min. Ramped up to 1900 for 30 minutes, then quenched between .75" aluminum plates and hit it with my compressor...

    Little edc

I made this for my Godfather. He sent me a piece of bog oak a while back when he found out I was making knives. I had a chunk of file, so I made him a small every day carry. It's about as big as most folders I have when open. The scales are bog oak and yellow box burl with white liners. My...

    Elk Skinner (also first Hamon)

Made this for an upcoming hunt. I had posted earlier pictures in the HT thread, but now that its done, thought I'd share it here as well. Blade is 1075, stainless bolsters and pins. The handle is coolibah burl. This is my first official hamon as well. I tried once before and the blade...

    YEAH! my first hamon!

So, it turns out that when you take the advice of the gurus on this site, things work out pretty well! This is a skinner I am making for an upcoming elk bow hunt (which I admit by making a skinning knife all but eliminates my chances of actually killing an elk). I used the last half of the...

    Knife for my deployed nephew

This is a knife I made for my nephew who is airborne infantry in Italy. He gave me some ideas, and we came up with this. Its 440c with burlap micarta scales. This was also my first kydex sheath. It all went pretty well. He asked for a horizontal scout style sheath to go on his molle pack...

    1075 crack...

Hey guys (and gals)! Well, I made (what would have been) a gorgeous bowie/fighter for my best friend out of a piece of .25 x 2: 1075 I got from Jantz years ago. I read that 1075 can also be made to have a hamon. I decided to give it a shot. I read for days, checked the fung shui in my shop...

    ramp soak PID shennanigans

Well, I purchased a ramp soak pid from ebay, and got it all wired up. I turned it on and weird things happened. I cannot change the set values for the required temp, unless I change it in the program mode. Even when I do that, however, once I tell it to run, it fires up and the SET VALUE...

    Pants = Pooped

Last night this 50 grit went super nova while I was grinding carrier bolt down to make a latch. Needless to say, at about 2000rpms, it made me count my fingers. Twice.

DIY HT oven brick and mortar question

Hey all! I am about halfway through bricking out my HT oven, and I have to say, mortaring these k23's together is a nightmare. I have been using sairbond refractory mortar, and no matter what, I cant get things to stick. The bricks literally suck the water out of the mortar right before your...

Couple of skinners from files. (well, technically a rasp and a file...)

These are a couple of file knives I cranked out for some friends of mine. The first one with the elk antler handle is actually from a ferriers rasp, and the second is from a Simonds @@@@@@@ file. That one is rocking the quilted maple handle and walnut/elk antler sandwich. I don't know if that...

    Hello from Colorado!

Hi there! My name is Chris, and I have been stalking this forum for a long while, and thought I should probably become a member... I am a high school science teacher that spends my free time making knives. I basically make one offs, no two alike. Some have been similar, but no mass...
