    Kitchen Knife Designs

Hey guys, I was just wanting some input on these designs for an 8" chef's knife and a 3.5" paring knife. Do you think these would work well? The specs are in red:

    Etching Machine

I'm wanting to get an etching machine so I can start marking my blades. Has anyone used this one? How do you think it would work? http://catalog.lectroetch.com/item/m...kits/item-1105

    Small Wheel Size

What size of small wheel do you guys use the most on your small wheel attachment? I was thinking either 1/2" or 3/4". I would be using it to clean up the index finger area of the handle and I would also use it for roughing the extra handle material from that area.

    1hp Motor

Would a 1hp motor on a variable speed 2x72 be adequate for most grinding applications? i wouldn't be doing much profiling, just bevels, handles, and stuff. I know the Grizzly 2x72 has a 1hp motor and tons of people use that. I'm using a 1x30 with a less than 1/3 hp motor right now so any upgrade...

    Contact Wheel

I was thinking about getting a 2x72 sometime and was wondering about contact wheels. Would you guys say that they are totally necessary to get? I would be getting most of my blades water jet cut so I wouldn't have to do a ton of profiling. Would shaping handle scales be much easier with one? I...

How do you guys prepare and glue you liners to scale material? I've heard of people using both superglue and epoxy.

    End-cut Boxes From USAknifemaker

Has anyone purchase one of the boxes of either micarta or g10? Were you satisfied and able to get enough material for scale to make it worth it? Are g10 and micarta mixed or are they separate boxes? Thanks!

    My First Three Knives Finished!

After a lot of work, I finally finished my first three knives from this thread. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1090264-My-Knife-Making-Journey-Advice-Would-Be-Greatly-Appreciated I can't really call one or another my first knife as I worked on them in a single batch but...

    First Knife WIP

I just started my first knife today! It's turning out much better than I thought, hopefully my beginner's luck keeps coming. :) Starting hacksawing the blade out from the bar stock. Now I smoothed it out with my 1x30 sander, a half-round file, and a little Dremel work. It's 1084...

    1084 ht

I know this has been asked hundreds of times, but is this a good procedure for HTing a stock removal knife from Aldo's 1084? 1. Profile, and bevel. 2. Normalize 3 times. (IS THIS NECESSARY ON A STOCK REMOVAL KNIFE? HOW WOULD I GO ABOUT NORMALIZING?) 3. Raise the temp to non-magnetic and let...

    52100

How easy is 52100 to grind? Would it be a good steel for kitchen and bushcraft knives or would 1095 be better for the bushcraft ones? I was planning on sending the blades to Peter's for HT so I wouldn't have to worry about that.

    Wanted: Knife Design Input

I drew up a few knife designs and I wanted to know if you guys could see any major design flaws. Here are some (not so good) pics. All of the knives will be 52100 I think. Is that good as long as I send the blades out for HT? Some paring knives. 4" blade and about 4" handle 1.25" tall...

What is a Good Starter Steel if I send the Blades out for HT

I'm looking to make some stock removal knives. What would be a good starting steel? I'm not planning on HTing my knives myself so that won't matter. I'm looking for a good steel that makes a good knife and isn't too hard to grind. One more thing, what is a good carbon steel for kitchen...

Zirconium Belts vs Aluminum Oxide belts for handle shaping

Do any of you guys use zirc belts for handle shaping? Do they last longer than alox? I can get them for the same price, that's why I'm wondering.

    Non-Gator Trizacts

Do the non-Gator versions of trizact last as long as the Gator versions? Do they work as well for blade finishing? One non-trizact question, how long will a 60 grit Blaze belt last when profiling and bevel grinding a 3.5in. blade and 4.5in.handle?
