    Best template material?

I'm using 1/8" flat bar stock purchased at a local hardware store for about $1.49/ft. I clamp the pattern to my blade stock, scribe the lines, and also drill the pin and thong holes using the pattern as a guide. If memory serves me correctly, Loveless and Merritt were doing the same thing in...

    Bevel Grinding Question

Thanks for all the advice. Obviously when I ground the blade, I ground it incorrectly. I was watching the edge which still had some thickness and trying to get the up-swept semi-skinner tip tapered (which doesn't seem to be easy to do) while I was unknowingly hogging out the middle out of...

    Bevel Grinding Question

After. I got carried away hollow grinding this blade and was getting discoloration because I had ground the middle portion way too thin. Maybe I was a little slow today because I didn't figure out what was going on until I looked at a cross section. Lee

    Bevel Grinding Question

I think I have answered my own question after putting the blade in a vise and breaking it. In cross section, the blade was swamped. The spine was still thick, the middle portion was way too thin, and the edge was slightly thicker than the middle. :( Lee

    Bevel Grinding Question

I was hollow grinding the companion knife, a semi skinner, to the Loveless style drop point hunter I posted on the forum a couple of days ago and started to get "hot spots" on the blade. In the end I scraped it. Because I usually spend too much time honing a blade to sharpen it, the...

Loveless Drop Point Hunter First Attempt

Here is my first attempt at a Loveless style drop point hunter. Shaping the guard, pinning it, and soldering it were new experiences for me. I put quite a bit of time in to this knife, but enjoyed the experience and working in a different style. Lee

    Latest Knife

This is my latest, knife number ten. O1 steel, Bocote handle. I haven't been particularly satisfied with my sheaths, so I went back to the Loveless/Barney book, How to Make Knives and actually followed Loveless' directions. I know very unmanly of me! Anyway, I think the sheath came out well...

    Knife Number Seven

Thanks for the comments. It has been delivered to the customer and he was very happy with it. I have another one in progress with Thuya burl as the handle material and a satin finished blade that I'll post when completed. It should have been done a couple of days ago but our heat wave in the...

    Knife Number Seven

Keith, Thank you for your comments. The handle started out as a 1"x 1 1/2"x 5" block. I prefer to work with 3/8" scales, but you're right, I should have thinned it down a little more. Part of the reason I went a little thicker was because I was worried I would lose even more of the wood's...
