What to use

New guy here. I’m using. 1075 and
15N20 for some Damascus and which quench oil do I use and can I use the same stuff to quench straight 10 series, 80crv2, 52100, ect. Also is what should the oil temp be before the quench?

Here's what Kevin Cashen has to say about 1080 : "Parks # 50 is a very fast oil designed for water hardening alloys, so 10XX series and 15n20, W1 or W2 are great with it,"

So, based on that a Damascus of 1075 and 15N20 would use Parks #50? (that's a question for the smart folks to answer.)

If you can only invest in one quench oil, use steels that it was designed for to get best results. As said above, Parks #50 for 10XX series, W1/W2 and 15n20. AAA for 80CrV2 and 52100.

If you keep making knives, you'll eventually want both oils, and in a decent amount. I'm in the process of getting a larger tank for my AAA, as I can only quench 2-3 blades of 80CrV2 at a time before it gets too warm and I start losing some hardness.

1075 is not 1080. It has less manganese, more like 1095. You can actually get a good hamon with high quality 1075. Use #50.
