What do you do for a shop apron?

What do you wear as a shop apron and where do you get it from?

Here is the reason I ask. I use to have one of those cheap aprons from HF

but I got tired of the thing turning me and my clothes yellow every time I sweat on it, so I finally gave it away, (with warning)! Plus the length was to short.

I then tried a denim apron. That was OK till recently I was doing some extended grinding and began to smell something burning. When I stopped to see what it was, it was me!:what!:

So I am back on the hunt for a new apron. I would prefer leather as I am not really into setting myself on fire and would like it too be about knee length, and OH Yes, I would also like to have something that didn't turn me a funny color every time I wore it. You know just in case I might have to go somewhere after working a while in the shop!

Anyone got any suggestions????

Cliff,
I had my apron made for many of the same reasons. I am 6"4" and tall in the upper body so I had a leather worker I knew at the time measure me so I knew the apron would hang down pass my knees. Its full cow hide like a ballistic armor so it gives more than just dust & dirt protection.

I have had it for about 12 years plus now and I am getting ready to get someone to stitch another one for me.

I found some 36" wide butcher paper and this time I will cut out the exact pattern I want. see the leather man that did the last one made it long enough but not quite wide enough in the chest. I grind sitting down so the chest coverage is very important.

I suggest you make your own or havesome that does leather stitching make it for you. That way you can put pockets, tie strap etc, right where you want them too.

I have a thick canvas one my seamstress grandmother made for me. I know Lee Valley carries a nice one. Ebay also has listings.

Hey Laurence, you trying to break me! I am or at least I use to be 6' tall and lately probably that big around as well! Don't think I can afford enough leather to go around my FCD disease!

FCD DEFINITION:

( fallen chest disease better known as fat belly) :what!::biggrin:

Got mine in gray leather from Blacksmith Depot. No pocket to catch on anything or to catch flying embers with. I'm 6' 1" and it covers me well. 235 lbs so I am not a little guy. I did add a small backside pocket to it for my soapstone. I am wearing it in my avatar photo.

I made my aprons from some Liberty overalls I had. I ripped out the leg seams and the seam that runs up the back and had a seamstress re-sew the legs in front to make an apron. It's plenty long,I'm 6'4", and plenty wide,I'm 240lbs. The straps over the shoulder are much more comfortable than a strap around the neck,I addad a strap across the back that goes across my shoulder blades with a Velcro attachment on one end, this keeps the straps from falling off my shoulders. I added a piece at the waist to tie behind my back to keep the sides in place. It still has all the pockets that came with the overalls.

There are different grades of hides. Mine has some barbwire scars on it but I don't care, I want the protection. I don't know if there are any tanneries or large leather outfits around you? Ask for seconds.

Are you sure that something like this won't fit your figure?

No not really, you know all these health conscious freaks these days talk about their six pack (abs)! Me I just laugh at them, (six pack, hell I got the whole keg) !:35::3::biggrin:

Now this fellow has the right idea, drink in hand and a pair of modified overalls. I mean if you own a keg you might as well show it off!!:s12205:
