VFD for vertical band-saw?

I have a new VFD that I want to mount to a pole or wall in the shop with a gang of receptacles for some buffers, disc grinders, etc. I thought if I could find a small three phase motor for my small Rigid brand Band-saw I could use it to cut steel? Would the motor have enough torque down low? Any motor recommendations?

torque won’t be a problem. AC motors on a drive make grunch-loads of torque. The problem with running below 20Hz is heat rise because the shaft mounted internal fan isn’t pushing any air. That’s not really a problem if you aren’t running for very long, but if you are you need gear reduction to get the motor speed up.

Could you use an auxiliary cooling fan instead? Be a lot less money then a gear drive??

yes. you can even buy one that mounts to the endbell where the fan shroud goes. A computer fan might even do it since the duty cycle is most likely going to be low.

A belt and step pullies is also good enough to get gear reduction.

Is your bandsaw belt driven? If so, no problem and this is one place I'd for sure go with an 1800 rpm motor for the extra torque at low speed. For cutting steel you want the saw blade in the 100 to 300 fpm range which would cover SS and carbon both.
