WOOD?

Walt, It could be many, a side picture would help? It almost looks an Oak maybe? but then you really need to cut it into some blocks, but only if its seasoned properly.

Perhaps someone else that deals with wood in this state can help more.

Good Luck!

How about some more details Walt. :D

Is it heavy or light? Soft or hard? Can you easily scratch it or dent it with your thumbnail? Where did you get it or where did it come from? Yeah some better pics would help too.

Could be oak. Could also be something like buckeye or olive. Yes I've seen buckeye just like that. That's why I asked where it's from and if it's heavy or light.

John asked all the right questions, and for how light/heavy it is, float in water. If it floats half out of water, then it's pretty light, if it floats almost all the wood in water, pretty heavy. If it sinks - well, then there's only a few woods it would be and I don't think none of those look like that. I agree with all, oak sure looks a lot like that, but then so do other woods.

Sorry was a hey I wonder then daughter started coughing.
The burl is about 7lbs and seems seasoned I found it last night at a shop sale for 2 bucks. Will get some better pics here shortly. Im trying to decide how to cut it into blocks. Is a 1ft long multi sided thing. All the character is exposed so is a challange for me to commit to where to hack into it. Lol

J. Doyle it doesnt have the same smell as myrtle when its cut or sanded.
I think with this and the other gorts and trades Im set for a while on wood. Time for more steel.

Yeah, after reading your latest posts with pics, I would conclude oak as well. :)

Good find at a good price.

WAlt, I'm with Laurence. I,m close to certain it's white oak burl, and very old I've got some just like it .Mine is as hard as a woodpeckers lip.

It cuts with a demo blade on my sawzall doesnt sand easily though. Im makin myself all fidgety with the terror of screwing up this by cutting it wrong. But is a learning experience and was only 2 bucks right?

Heres one of the scales that I got from the burl

Here is the center and two outer pieces that were left over due to being too close to dangerous with the table saw. Time for a band saw to get a bit more off these.
