Uddeholm D2

Just purchased some Uddeholm D2 from Tracy. Excellent price and selection, the site has become a real one-stop-shop for me. My question; Is there any difference between steels from different manufacturers, or is it all held to the same alloying %?

Frank,
The Term D-2 Tool steel does designate a certain mix & Percentage of Elements that is held through out the steel industry.

When I purchase my steel from Niagara Specialty Metals.
Each steel type comes with a sheet copy of the analysis of the steel by a Certified Metallurgist designating it as a certain ASI? certified formula of steel and a listing of the exact element percentages making it a CPM-S35VN or 440C steel for instance.

It's possible that there may be a inferentially made steel from China or India for example???

The Steel's that Boss Dog and other note worthy supple house's have are purchased from known mills that provide a similar steel affidavit as I have mentioned.

I think it's the American steel institute? ASI ?? It's early AM and I am at home. The papers are at my store.

I only buy my steels from known suppliers that can or do provide that information if asked?
Also I mark my Steel pieces with their designation with a BIC White Marker correction pen as 440C, CPM-154CM or CPM-D2 or the like? For my own sanity.

So my answer is YES!
The steels are held to the same Alloying %

Excellent. I've spoken with a gentleman from Niagara recently over the phone and they look to be an great company. I make sure to label my steels every few inches with a paint marker, and the small cutoffs too...that way I don't end up with any "mystery metal" in inventory. Thanks!
