Today's blade grind

Thank you KenH. I have been working hard to get a decent grind line. I've slowed my grinder down and using belts like they are free (famous quote
). I do like the looks of flats on a knife.

OK opaul inquisitive minds want to know! How the he!! are you doing such good grinds. I see where you sold your bubble jig, (unused mind you)! A PM will be fine!! LOL
With my wife's health I haven't been in the shop in.................. a while and went out to grind a blade on my newly re-paired grinder the other day and you can guess it, that blade went in the OH OH bucket! I know they say muscle memory, I guess my muscles forgot!
So started grinding paint sticks again. The first would have been great, so grabbed a second and *^%$$ that would have been another for the OH OH bucket!! So now I am gun shye! I have several that need to be ground and I just can't make myself stand there and screw up another one!! Throwing away blade steel hurts!!!! Always before I have walked out there and even if it had been a while, before it got so screwed up I couldn't catch up with it, I did just that. Got right back in the groove. This time my groove seems to be somewhere else!!
Anyway I am liking that one. What is the finish on the upper part of the blade????? Inquiring minds want to know, hey don't give up any secrets you don't want to!

First of all, slowing down the grinder and using fresh belts is definitely helping.
I've started taking my time and I always begin on my weak side and I grind a little on each side as I progress.
But for fundamentals I'll have to give credit to this thread and the photos and advise that came with it.

You know I had forgot the Dykem thing. When I first started it helped to dial my grind in and John's advice is spot on. My biggest problem is I have lost my confidence. I think I will go get some mild steel tomorrow and see how much dust I can make. You know,........... get my confidence back!!
My son use to race and I was mechanic and crew chief. I once had fellow tell me at the track that is how come the young guns do so well, that don't know you can't do that!!! Confidence and ignorance are real close together!! LOL

As silly as it sounds, I can't grind a bevel on mild steel to save my life. It doesn't feel the same, and all you have to do is breathe on it wrong and you've cut a trench in it.
Grinding steel that's already heat treated is so much easier to me. Since it grinds slower because it's hard, it's also harder to make a catastrophic mistake. I'm so used to grinding hardened stainless- I just did two blades in 1075 and they felt like butter. I was scared to death. Finish grinding after the heat treat felt "right" to me again and I could actually breathe.
