No problem with the black wood except it takes about two 60 grit belts to shape the handle. I love the wood, hate having to use so many belts.

Its very reasonable. I get it different places, I can't remember now what I typically pay but its on the lower cost end, much more so than true ebony.
It takes a really nice finish. I took those scales to 1000 grit and then buffed it out with wax.
