I assume that everyone who has mentioned what I consider "thin" stock is because the blades are being produced via the stock removal method? From a forging perspective, I always recommend 1/4" stock. I teach and build knives from the viewpoint.... "You can always take steel away if you have too much, but if you don't have enough, you can never put it back."
I suspect it's simply the different mentalities between forging and stock removal.... its very easy for me to take a thicker piece of steel and forge is to the thickness I desire.... but it's nearly impossible for me to make a thin piece of steel thicker. Nearly everything I make begins as 1/4" or thicker.
