The Laser Thread

Ok. I’ve been looking. This seems like a good choice and will get the pad and air blower. Might get the enclosure as well but maybe not. What do you laser guys think??

That will do anything you want, and more by a large margin. However, unless I'm missing something your budget was $500.00 I looked on the Ortur website and that appears to be twice that much. Or did I miss something?

Others should chime in soon.

I have not used any air assist, so I cannot give an opinion on it except to say I do fine without it. The enclosure is a good idea if you have space in your shop for it. I like my setup portable so I can hang it on the wall when I do not use it mainly because I do not have a place to set up an enclosure. With an enclosure you have the option to use a vacuum to remove smells of burning leather too so that is nice.

What do you think of that unit. Is it more that what’s required for knife making. I’m totally ignorant on lasers.

I don't have an air assist either and so far I haven't needed it. The 20 watt laser obviously increases your power and will let you do other projects where you need more power. Cutting cool designs out of wood and then assembling them into various designs is a pretty popular (and potentially profitable) use for lasers. Same goes for engraving glasses, water bottles, etc.

It's a good deal. That wattage laser sells for 550 and the standard package is $500'ish and you're getting the airpump tossed in. So the math works.

The only time you'll need air assist is when engraving/cutting leather or wood. It does help then.

Here are a couple of lasers in your price range. I don't know anything about this first one and are all shipped from USA. They all have the small spot, .08mm dot size which is good.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/145391568930 (20 watt for $400 shipped, no air assist)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/225833698333 (20 watt AtomStack brand which is a known manuf with air assist. Might be my choice other than Ortur, but is half price for 20 watts)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/235270616368 This Atezr P20 PLUS is $548. The spot size is .08X.06mm which is the smallest I've seen. Smaller is better. There are several reviews about this model. I was not familiar with the Atezr brand, but that doesn't mean anything since I've been fooling with lasers for only a short time.

I really like that Atzer P20 plus

That is a good machine. I have an ORTUR and that one is a step or three above my setup. I am no expert but I would think that would cover all of your needs and then some.

I agree with Chris - budget issues aside I'd sure like to have that 20 watt machine also. I got an enclosure since I wanted to be able to burn inside, and the enclosure really helps frame from a safety standpoint. I've got dogs that wander around in the room and I didn't wish the laser to damage their eyes. OR, anybody else that might come into room. The enclosure prevents viewing the laser point from the side.

I think the enclosure is a great safety addition.
