In a different thread, John was kind enough to take the time to post pics and descriptions of setting up his mini mill with DRO's. If not for his input, I'm not sure I would have figured this out.

X axis in, milling a piece of angle aluminum to help protect the sensor and slide rail.
Also got the z axis installed late last night, now one more to go.
Seems to be much more accurate than just the hand wheels alone.
Once this is done I can start putting the lathe I said I wasn't going to buy together (eye roll) .

Edit to add, this setup was $109 delivered, the others were $239 + $50 shipping.

Which mill is that? I've looked at mills for years and never pulled the trigger....really want one though.
 
That is the HF, I'm happy with it, it will do all I will ever need it to but there are better out there.

Yeah...I'm in the same boat. Would love a "real" one but one day I'll get something like that HF you've got. Would be interested in some projects you 've done with it...not to hijack this thread though but PM me :D

Edit: Not in the same boat really...don't have a mill but would like to be in the same boat

No highjack dd, it's all good.
I have not used the mini to it's full potential yet, as I am still learning it's abilities and limitations. I have flattened and squared scales and handles, slotted bolsters and spacers, milled tang slots for a through tang knife with scales, flattened ricasso area, shaped the step downs for the tang, cut in the shoulders at the guard area, and of course drilled with it.
Some of the other guys know more about the capabilities than I, hopefully they will add to the list.
And, I have heard it is invaluable if you want to get into folders.
 
Nice, Dan! I just did the same upgrade to my HF mill a few months ago. You'll be very happy with the upgrade, I can guarantee it.
