HHH Knives

From time to time I test a blade. Normally when Im done.. I think.. Man I wish I had of taken a few pics of this..

This time I remembered..

This is one way to do it.. and Im sure there are many other ways you guys test your heat treatment and steel. I would love to hear or even better see them.. post up some pics on hear if ya want..

First pics.. are the raw HHH damascus. then the blade rough ground B4 heat treat..

We do our heat treat in house and this is a 1095/15n20 blade. Oil quenched..

Me with the blade after heat treat. 1 st I chop through a 1X2

Tore through this wood with ease.. Now for the next test.

Test 2

after that I took a chunk of 2 X 4 and used the piece I had just chopped to baton my way through the 2 X 4 about 5 times.

again n problem splitting the 2 X 4 many times.. Then I took the pieces and set them up and hatcheted through them a few more times.

Then I whittled on the 2X4 making tons of great currly'y

Lastly I took a few pics of the blade shaving hair of my arm..

I know that there are many ways to test the edge retention and hardness of a blade. This is just one method and its kinda fun..

The edge was still good and sharp.. not quite scary sharp.. but it was more then working sharp after the chopping and splitting and etc..

Thanks for looking and any comments or suggestions of ways to test the edge on my knives.. let me know.. I will try them and post pics of the progress.

Also.. If you have pics of your knives being tested.. please post them up.. I would love to see how some of you guys test your blades!

God Bless
Randy

Looks like some pretty good tests to me. I have 3 that will be done this weekend and I am actually nervous about doing something like this with them.

Btw, you look nothing like I pictured in my mind... :)

I have to agree , I'm working on a huge piece for my stomach.....its got to be big to cover it all.

Not to derail too much further, but I've got my one big star on my right shoulder and have plans already to put a shield around it to make it even bigger, then eventually go almost down to my elbow and up onto the top of my shoulders... :)

Brad.. You better get testing them blades my man. I want to see some pics!

Patience my Brother, patience... ;)

I have a day-job as an IT Systems Analyst that is REALLY cutting into my knife making time! Hahaha! My plan is to have all 3 done by Sunday night, and then I can hack on some 2x4's in my garage and cut some stuff...

Nice testing Randy. Really put it through the paces there. And I have to admit I'm with Brad,
"Btw, you look nothing like I pictured in my mind... " I don't know what I pictured, but it was Wrong!
I've got a perfectly shaped body, round, so I don't need tattoos.
Keep up the good work, Dozier

All this " you look nothing like what I pictured in my head " stuff is gona give me a complex! lolol rotflmao.. I may need therapy after this! Heck, I probably needed it B4 this! Hello my name is Randy, Im... Im a... Im a steel addict! and Im cross addict to burl and rare handle materials.. to funny!

SHOW ME some testing pics Guys!

OK Randy, I figured it out, kinda.
In that picture, the one at the top of this thread, you look like you just finished something difficult, real difficult, and are saying "OK, what's next?" with a big arse knife in your hand.
If I was in a fight, I'd want you on my side!
Dozier

back to testing. How did you get the blade so sharp in the first place? No trade secrets, just the basics Oh Bad One that looks like a Pirate!

Dozier, Arrrg, Thats funny! As far as the picture, I think its just that I just dont like getting my picture taken, so I look like that in every one! Thats probably why I dont like gettin it taken.. and around we go! lolol

I sharpen my knives on a 1 X 42 sander. On the slack area just above the platen.. Normally starting out with around a 400 grit belt and set the edge.. making sure I have a burr all the way along the edge.. then progress to a 800.. same way with a much smaller burr.. Then I switch to a really old 800 thats basically a paper belt.. if I had to guess like 2000 grit.Just a little tip, take your time.. and dont let it get to hot! it can and will quickly get hot and as you know is be bad for the temper. The last step I used a ultra fine ceramic rod and gave it a few stokes to finish the edge.. convex.

When I was done testing this blade, I hit it with the ceramic again and the knife returned to scary sharp.. :)

What other tests do you guys do? Please post a few testing pics or even describe your methods of testing.. Thanks

God Bless
Randy
