can you stain stabilized wood? I bought some nice figured pecan and hackberry scales. they are very light in color wondering if i can put a light stain on them. they are not acrylic stabilized, if that matters
It all depends on how and who stabilized it?
The best to do is try it on some scrap cuts you have finished and see if it penetrates the wood and stains to your liking?
It does depend on who and how the wood was stabilized, but in my experience it will take a stain. Sand it down first to get the surface clean of any finishes that might have been applied. Try the stain on the back side of the scale so you see how it goes. You may want to add a thinner (i.e. mineral spirits) depending on the stain. Then you can refinish when it's good and dry. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
