I just looked at some pics. I did not know what it was. That could work out to be very cool.

I've got a lot of hornbeams in the yard. They get 6 inches round or so then die and fall over pretty regularly. It's very heavy, dense wood. I would imagine it would be good knife handle material but have never tried it.

Gorgeous! No experience with hornbeam, I'm afraid. My biggest problem with a piece like this is trying to figure out which area gets sacrificed. I want to use the whole piece. Ha! Be sure to come back with some photos of the finished piece.

With some chatoyance to add to the lovely spalting, that will make a really nice handle
