Sharpening on a 1x30?

I need help learning how to sharpen knives. I know some sharpen on a 1x30. However any grit above 400 the edge bounces on the platen because of the seam on the belt. I hear some sharpen on the loose part. I tried that and I seem to get uneven edge because the belt bends and flexes.
 
Boss's video is a good one. I think the key to getting it even is learning to embrace the convex and apply consistent pressure.
