Hello Everyone,
I am new here. These are three of examples of the kinds of things I like to make (a seax with and without sheath, a cutlass, and a viking-style knife). This seems like a good group. I have only been doing this about 18 months, and I have depended on the net for feedback and teaching. There are not many bladesmiths near me, so I have learned almost everything the hard way.

I usually either try to get some differential hardening (hamon) or I do pattern welding. I am hooked on this stuff, and just recently got a hydraulic press, which has opened all sorts of doors.

Pretty cool. Do you have a picture that shows the tip of the seax? I keep meaning to make one, but I haven't got around to it yet.
 
here is one. This one was not the broken-back type.

There are a million different ways these things were made.

Here are several - one is a hybrid of the broken-back langsax, in progress, that I should finish next week. It has a ladder pattern.

There are two basic narrow seaxes, and then the short one is a working-type that is based on a museum photo.

Everything from a broken-back to a bowie to a wharncliff were all used back then.

actually - yes - the ladder one is for manlicher. I hope to finish it next week. It is farther along than what you see now, I just haven't posted newer pics.
 
I saw a shot he posted on campfire of the blade. Does it have walnut or curly maple? There were two different answers
 
It will be walnut. I have the handle rough shaped and the blade final ground. I now need to do a whole lot of sanding and polishing. I also want to put a copper accent ring around the handle.

the bolster/guard and pommel plate are both random damascus.

I will use the rest of the same walnut board to make him a sheath, so handle and sheath will match perfectly.

Steel throat and chape on sheath, with copper band around middle to match handle (handle and sheath will each have steel at each end and copper in the middle, with the majority of each being from the same piece of walnut).

There are only about 3 full days of work left, assuming that I don't undo a lot of finishing accidentally at some point with a slip or something.

But, there are another 4 or 5 days of rubbing everything with tung oil and polishing and taking pics, etc.

I hope to ship about end of this month.

He has been a pleasure to work with. I have verified each step with him along the way to make certain he is getting what he wants. He is giving enough direction so I am confident but leaving enough up to me for the artistic part to feel "right."

I think it will come out very good in the end.
