I'm looking for any info or "WIP'S" on how to do the silver wrap around the handle of a San Francisco style dagger.

Thanks for any help here

Jim

This type?

You can see what looks like an unsoldered joint in this pic which seems to be typical of period pieces but pictures of modern makers seem to have a continuous wrap.

Yes Mark, Just like those. I really like that top one alot. I need to find out how to form the silver around the outside of the handle. Thanks

Bruce Bump or Oldknife hopefully will see this thread.
I'll be watching this as I'd like to know also.

Have you done the handle rivits in that type?
I'm planing to trying them on a knife now.

Jim,

Not a wip per say, but these couple photos by MS Steve Culver may help you understand at least one method of creating a San Francisco style handle wrap.

The handle jig is about 2/3's down this page.

A TON of great info shared by Steve on his website in addition to this.

Merry Christmas !

Brad,

I've never made or attempted one of these... Yet :D

That said though the silver would probably need annealed multiple times during the forming. At least with nickel silver brass etc we would do the opposite of steel to anneal it. Heat to a dull red and water quench to anneal. It will work harden quickly while forming which would be the reason for multiple anneals.

This may or may not be the case with fine silver also.

The actual forming would be done cold.

Wish I could be more help but I found all this very interesting when making a nickel silver throat and toe for a sheath a few years back so I thought I'd share it with Y'all.

Also FWIW I do know Mr Culver to be a very personable fella and in all likelihood he would be willing to point you in the right direction on these if asked.

From my very limited exposure to Mr Culver he is a very approachable guy. I'm just curious I have never worked silver but with the current price I don't think I will be using it any time soon:)

Hi Jim, I don't claim to be an expert on the outside wrap, will post a picture of one I did and what was used to do it with, that Jim Ence knife looks to be one piece don't know how he did that, I would do it in two pieces think you would need to take a wedge out on the sharp corners and hard solder them, the one in the picture I had to cut a piece out and solder it was to sharp of a radiosIMG_0253.jpgIMG_0252.jpgIMG_0255.jpgIMG_0215.jpgIMG_0216.jpg Have not made one since, need to narrow the dye .080" all most ran out of guard with on this one. Alex Daniels used basically the same method to shape the frame/wrap when he demonstrated at Batson's and Bowie's.

Last June I had the pleasure of spending time with Steve Culver in Canada at Jim Clows hammer-in
Here is what I have on my hard drive from his demo on this subject:
