rough cut wood, what now?

how bad are cracks?

Those cracks are bad enough that I would trim the scales down.
Some would fill with super glue and hand sand over to fill in with the wood.

I like starting with clean pieces myself, If small cracks or fissures appear when I am sculpting a handle, Then I will fill with Super glue and hand sand over it until it filled and smooth.

There is always waste when you cut up your own logs! Just the way it is!

Its ok, for me this block with waste is still a whole lot 'cheaper' than buying scales online!!
