Remove arbor from chuck.

Hello all - looking for some info on how to remove an arbor from a 5/8" keyless chuck I've been using with the drill press. Now I'd like to remove the MT-2 arbor and replace it with a R8 arbor.

How to remove the existing MT2 arbor from the chuck??? The chuck is a nice German made keyless chuck - says it's got a B16 taper so I ordered a R8 X B16 arbor.

I've clamped arbor in vise and bumped chuck with a brass hammer - but didn't bump too hard in an attempt to loosen.

Looking any good ideas or suggestions.

Ken,
Most I have had will tap out, some have a wedge shaped key you tap through to dislodge. Not knowing what drill press you have? I recommend you look on the net through google for a how to or manual for your model of press? You don't want to damage anything.

You may also find that heating the chuck with a heat gun will help loosen it up, though obviously you don't want to get to too hot.

Wedge for removing the taper from the spindle.

Removing the chuck from it's taper adapter is different and won't require the wedge.

It is explained pretty well here-

Of course each manufacturer may be different and chucks with integral adapters do exist.

Open the chuck all the way and check for a retention screw or an open hole you can insert a punch into to drive the taper adapter out.

Hope this helps :)

Looks like I didn't explain myself very clearly - too many folks mis-understood and thought I was trying to remove arbor from drill press. Naw, that's simple, just knock a taper thru the drill press spindle and they pop right out. I was trying to say "remove an arbor from a 5/8" keyless chuck" - got the chuck 'n arbor laying on table. Jacobs chucks have a hole thru that you can put a pin thru and knock arbor out, but this German is solid. I was able to use a clamp on the space on the arbor just above the chuck, using an anvil for support I was able to knock chuck off arbor ok. I'd hit chuck pretty hard a couple of times before posting and my mind was pulling a blank on other ideas. So, I turned to this great group for ideas. Don and Andrew provided the right idea for the wedge - Thanks. many heads are better than one in solving problems. Sometimes too many cooks will spoil the soup, but I usually find ideas from many folks actually help.

Put the whole mess in the freezer a couple hours or more, unless you have nitrogen. Then tap along the top of the chuck around the arbor. Don't put heat to it while it's cold, you could crack the chuck.

You're right Rudy - I didn't even think of the freezer idea. I'll try and remember that next time.
