Releiving liners

I noticed someone on another post said they didn't know how to relieve slipjoint liners without using a milling machine.

I've used a Dremel tool with a sanding sleeve to do this. Works fine.

I used a dremel on my last three or four. It works. A tip, if you use a dremel, bump the edge of the liners with a file afterward, to even out the edge. It's hard to get it perfectly even with a dremel, but you can hide the uneven part a bit by cleaning up the edge.

Mr. Robinson, thanks for sharing these kinds of tips. I'm spending lots of time in "Slipjoints My Way" and your post addresses a few question I have. On page 51 you show the two liners after being relieved (actually after the bolsters have been mounted.. pg 51 is about sanding down the spot welds). But the picture is great for showing the relieved areas around the pivot. The two sides aren't relieved exactly the same, though. If you were to look into the opened knife would the difference between the two reliefs be visible or is not worth pulling your hair out over if you can't make them exactly the same with a dremel? And how deep do you go for these reliefs?

John, you can't see the relieved areas when the knife is assembled.

The goal is simply to keep the liners from rubbing the blade, so any depth will work. I usually went .005 - .010" deep.

Be very careful not to relieve the area where the spring will touch the liners or that will show when the knife is closed.

I couldn't have made a knife without my Dremel. It has a flex shaft, so it's easy to hold the little handpiece.
