I was just Annealing a tang on a Bowie knife,I do this using a tall cylinder of water and submerging the knife up to the recoso and then heat the tang with a torch and watch the colors run down the tang.
Just the normal process after the tang was cool enough to handle I started to wipe it down and noticed how fast a few water spots dried the nasty brown that's the bain of carbon steel (not a problem as I have 4 more grades to go in the hand sanding) and it got me thinking.I use Break Free on all my carbon steel and never had a issue and I know there are some new products out that are supposed to be awesome at rust prevention.Ive also used wax in the past and this brings me to my thought. One of the tricks I learned a long time ago from my bushpilot buddies was to spray your windshield down with lemon pledge, most Bush planes have no windshield wipers and water just beads up and blows off the windshield. I've used this on my big rig and my jet boat and Argo to clean the windshield and thought I wonder if it would do the same and last a while on a carbon steel knife.I think I might just have to do a chip test and compare it side by side with Break Free.
