Just starting to collect old Puma knives - anyone else? If so, I need some expert advice about cleaning a nonstainless steel blade as the hunting knife I have is very old but needs a shine. Thanks .....

Welcome to the pack. Depending on how old the blade is, I wouldn't try to shine her back up. I'd use a rough cloth (denim works pretty fair) to clean up the blade and then I would clean all of the oil off and preserve it with something like Rennaisance wax. That's just my $0.02. Often times when it comes to older blades, you can do more damage than good when you try to polish them up so it is best to just clean and stabilize thier condition.

thanks - that is good advice. I will grab the denim and try it.

i think Murph is right. if collecting knives is the same as guns . doing to much can turn a $10,000 collectable into a $400 shooter. in this case less may be best

I think you guys are right - I will leave the blades alone and not try to shine them. I am still having problems opening the smaller knives that fold into the handle. it takes alot just to pull them out. can I use any type of oil or lubricant? it is a very old Puma knife from Germany manufactured sometime before 1960. thanks again ...
