I'm making first folding knife and read that the pivot pin must be tapered. I was going to use 1/8 inch steel rod. How would this be tapered? Does this pin need to go through hardening process?? Where can i buy a ready to go pivot pin 1/8" Thanks for any help. :2:

The taper is just to get it in the hole, and it should be annealed not hardened. Grind, file, or sand a point on the rod stock to get the pin into the hole easier.

well, i must be trying to make this harder than it is. thanks for making sense of this for me!

I use to load my pin material in an old drill press and hold a file at an angle as the material was spinning. It gave a nice medium length taper. The you can clean it up with a bit of 220 grit.

Like Johnny says, or chuck the pin up in a hand drill and use a file on the end. I keep a battery powered drill at my side all the time.
