New wood source.

Really excited!! Just found out there is a custom wood shop opening pretty close to me!! They sell large pieces of wood for various large wood working projects. I contacted them and he seems willing to sell small pieces or cut offs to me?? He asked what I was looking for I told him Burks and highly figured stuff. Will see what he says??

When dealing with those types of outfits, you get a far better deal when you buy larger chunks, and resaw them yourself. I've been doing so for years, and the price difference is nothing short of phenomenal.

Find anything local for me is problematic... ya see, in Montana, Oak and Hickory are consider "exotic hardwoods". Heck, where I grew up, we used those as fuel for the wood stove in the farm house! :)

Gliden - Nice catch. If you keep your eyes/ears open you can find all sorts of usable stuff. Finish carpenters, cabinet makers, all sorts of tradespeople would have access to cutoffs and shorts for wood and other handle material. Some time ago, I found a source for Corian counter tops. I needed a piece of Husker red! Works great for slabs and accent pieces. A little bit goes a long ways, but a 1 foot cut off will yield a bunch of usable material. All you have to do is ask and sometimes it is free if you haul it off!!

He does larger stuff but buys the wood in bulk. I'm hoping to get some smaller whole Burls etc... Time will tell waiting for a phone call from him.

Do y’all use hickory for axe handles and such?

In the retail hardware stores you can buy the "factory" hickory handles for most tools that originally come with them.... but they are spendy. An example is the "large blacksmith" hammer handles I use on all the Angle Peen hammers I produce...... Right around $8 each if I buy locally..... and no discount for quantity purchases. If I order the EXACT same brand/handle, the cost less than 1/2 of that per handle.

I can still remember when we first moved to Montana.... I went into a local hardware store looking for some Hickory for hatchet handles..... I ask if they carried Hickory, and the response was..... "Yes, it's back there in the Exotic Hardwoods section." That's when I learned that anything harder/denser then Lartch is considered "exotic" woods in Montana! But it does have it's advantages...... a couple of years ago the Mrs. and I took a trip to Indiana to visit family and friends.... I towed my single axle dump trailer along. We visited one of Cindy's high school pals (who now owns/runs a sawmill) I loaded out my trailer with White and red oak, hickory, cedar, and black walnut..... all for $200. I hauled it to Montana, and drove by one of our locally owned lumber stores...... before I could even ask, they offered me $2,500 for the entire load! Yep! Done Deal! :) Even counting gas, hotels, and food for the trip, we made money on that vacation!
