New sheath design

Von Gruff

KNIFE MAKER
I have developed a new sheath style for the mid sized hunting knives that will fit the hunter skinner, skinner, bushcraft hunter and the safari knife.
Offered as either a 30 degree (left sheath in the pic) or 45 degree (right sheath in the pic) cross draw it may be better than the horrizontal sheath in many instances. The two knives in these pics are my present skinner with swamp kauri and buffalo horn and a previous and now superceded design with giraffe bone and hidden pins over buffalo horn bolsters on a blued blade.

The difference is in where you would wear them on the belt. The 30 degree unit would be more apropriatly worn closer to the weak side hip bone where the 45 degree one would be comfortable closer to the front of the body.

These will go over very well in this “the chics dig horizontal carry sheaths” society. Plus (as a selling point) they address a very serious safety concern with the horizontal Hollywood middle of the back sheath. If you fall on your back, which is likely in the outdoors, I guarentee you a bad back injury with a “small of the back” sheath. Your’s being offset the hip will greatly help with that concern.

i like this very much. It is always nice to be able to sit down or get in the truck without having to take your knife off your belt.

As evidence in every aspect of your work - scrutiny, practicality, refinement and execution. Great work Von.

I have made two middle of the back horizontal carry sheaths and the one thing I said to each of the buyers was that while it may look the image of the bad guy it is not a carry style sheath that I would want to try returning the knife to. I can see the sheath getting very badly cut or the off hand in trying to guide it in.
I also think the 45 degree weak side x draw is about as good an alternative to the traditional carry as can be had. I know when I was doing cowboy action shooting my favourite gun and carry was a cross draw for my little birdshead 1873 and even won a comp for fast draw using that carry and draw style.

It was the design notes from (Major General -retired -US Ranger) " J T " that came about through the requirments for the knife that I called the JT Ranger. His explanation for that carry style were very convincing and if you look at old pictures of the fur trappers etc you often see the same style of carry although many were more in the 30 degree which is why I made one like that as well but in the reflective light of day I think that while I have the pattern for both I think that the 45 degree option will be the one to go into the standard offerings.

This was the thread where J T (or redleg as he is known on the forums) introduced the knife and sheath to the forum

You must be a skinny guy Gruff. Cross draw anything is not fat guy friendly...

Off the Africa hunting forum...analyzing one of Von Gruff's hunting rigs...good things to hear about a field knife! The second fella has one......

"I had a look (knifeoholic, me) and found myself saying. "That is a perfect working knife". The words just slipped out. Fair summary? "

"Yes - but with a caveat. It's primary design was to be of ideal configuration to be a last line of defense against an angry cat or hostile local. I have not had the pleasure of having to try and actually peel a leopard off of myself, but have had three opportunities where I could have. I have twice been in uncomfortable situations with drunk locals in remote towns while picking up supplies. A bit of blade isn't a handgun, but it can deescalate or conclude a situation much quicker than a pair of fists where the former is not an option. The blade is ideally configured for that purpose, with directed penetration more important than a slash. Secondly, it will do all those other things for which we own knives in the first place to include cut a potato or a rope. But it's balance, heft, central thrust line, and simplicity are perfect for it's primary mission.

I should add that I own several Randalls and other custom knives, but this is the first that has it exactly right in exactly the right configuration. At least for me. "
