I want to put PID in my new forge to watch temp. Where should I place thermocouple and how to secure it??

Where you place there thermocouple to achieve the truest readings depends on where the burner(s) are....... with a single burner the truest reading will be on the same side as the burner, at a level consistent with where you generally place the work pieces. (OUT OF THE FLAME'S PATH)

You only need approx the first 3/4-1" of the thermocouple exposed inside the forge...... if you have too much inserted, it will shorten the life of the thermocouple. Depending on the diameter of thermocouple you're using, drill a slightly larger size hole through the forge body and insulation (when a thermocouple goes bad, it will swell, and if you drill the same size hole as the dia of the thermocouple, you'll be forced to cut it off to get it out....not an easy chore). I don't use anything to "secure" it in place.....I just drill the hole on a horizontal plane, and the weight of the thermocouple keeps it in place.
