I’m hand sanding my first Damascus blade. That turned out anyway. It’s time for me to ask a few questions. In the past I have soldered the bolsters in place. I’m not sure if that is such a good idea with this blade. The problem is the blade itself. Because I am a beginner I get some runs when I solder. This leads me to my first question.
If I solder the bolsters on should I do it before or after the etch. If I etch then solder the bolsters on and have a drip I will change the look of the etch by cleaning up that area. I think. If I put the bolsters on then etch???? What will 20+ min’s in ferric acid do to my nickel silver bolsters. I think I already know.
Now for the scales. When I finish grind the bolsters and scales. I just took the etch off that area. Can I re-etch the handle area with something like a Q-tip to bring that back. Maybe pin it all. Finish grind then etch. ????? I’m not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!!!
