My find for the week!

I went to the Habitat for Humanity Resale shop this morning and found this! It came from the local high schools wood shop. I really didn't need a new drill press, but I felt I should still get it. Here are the particulars. Powermatic 1150 with .75 hp 3ph 220 Baldor motor. I believe the motor is TEFC. It has a box on the side with a reset switch that my buddy thought may be a phase converter (the shop teacher told me that the school doesn't have 3ph power so he isn't sure how it was wired). Inside the box it says it is a magnetic 3ph starter. I don't know what that is either. The table on it doesn't have a hole in the middle, so will I need to mount a vise to the table? I'm also not sure if the thing is set up correctly because the 3-handled spindle for lowering the press keeps hitting the arm for raising and lowering the head. It has a mechanical speed control on the front. Looking at the instruction manual it seems like it works off of a snowmobile style clutch for speed changes.

I'm thinking I may just take the motor off of this and use it to make a variable speed disc grinder, and then just getting a 110 motor for the drill press. What do you guys think, was it worth $150?

I took the motor off today, and am planning on getting new one ordered. My question is, are the feet on motors all the same? Will I be able to order a motor from Wayne Coe and have it match up to the bolt pattern of the drill press? The motor I took off was held on with four bolts through the foot on the bottom. Do I actually need to get measurements off the old one, or are the motors mounting plates standard?
Thanks

You did great! Excellent Drill press!

There is a coding on the plate of the machine.
My grinder motors are always 56C That's the frame size and there are many different HP motors that can go into it.

Check with Wayne direct, I am sure he can walk you through it.

Marks links were a big help. I was trying to understand what the difference between 56 and 56c was, and now I get that it has to do with the face of the motor. This drill doesn't need a 56c but just a standard 56. I found 1.5 hp single phase. It's bigger than I need, but then again you can't have too much power! :)

A 1.5 hp for that drill press should be excellent! Thats what I want someday! I have a 3/4 HP Chinese POS " Piece of Doo Doo" drill press and I want one with a 5/8" chuck and a 1 1.2HP motor. Some day?
