My Damascus Fighter

Not wanting to get too far ahead on the KITH, I decided to make a similar knife, only out of Damascus.

I bought a 3x15" piece of Alabama Buckshot Damascus.

I decided to do the guard and Blade from the same material. There was enough to do this Blade, the guard and one more knife.

Here the rough grind is about 1/2 done.

Then rough grind done.

Then I worked on the guard. The experience I got from making the C Guard for the KITH knife, made this one go very easy.

The spacer is drilled but not filed to fit, and the handle is drilled and roughed out.

.

Thats where it sits tonight. I will probably work on it more on Monday.

wow, just wow. 100+

The Guard and blade are etched and nearly done. This one truly has to be "in hand" to appreciate, it's amazing what it does in the light. :)

It could possibly be done tomorrow.

here is what I have found is the best method for etching a large blade.

Vinegar in a cheap pan (didn't borrow the wife's pan ;) ) in oven at 215 degrees. Flip in 5 minutes then at 10 minutes remove oxides with steel wool. 2 or 3 10 minutes etches is plenty. Vinegar is easier and cheaper than Ferric Chloride and seems to give a deeper etch.

Alabama Buckshot Damascus fighter. Grey Oak Burl Handle. My favorite I've made so Far. What do you think?

Now to get some leather on it.

There's a lot to like about that one Ricky. I'm not crazy about the guard...seems a little too agressive for my taste, but that's just me, and I mean no disrespect at all. I do like it though, it's a real nice looking knife.

Thanks Lagrange, I appreciate the input. A little too aggressive is what I was going for, it is built from tip to butt to be a fighter, and I researched quite a bit on this one. I'll take that comment as a compliment. :)

And thanks LiamLynch, there are far too few people willing to take the time to post any sort of reply.

Excellent job on this one Ricky! You must be finishing one every few days?

Your work gets better and better. Love the shape of the handle.

Ricky, there is nothing not to like about the knife. The guard is very Bagwell influenced and that's a very good thing. If the turn downs on the guard are very close to the blade you will learn another lesson when making the sheath.:les:

Beautifull work!
With the lower arm of the gaurd sticking out that far, looks like you would have a hard time sharpening the blade all the way to the back of the blade.

Nice job Ricky! The first time I saw the guard I was like what the? But now that its done I like it....a lot! Looks great!
