Matchlock Axe/Pistol

I started forming the oval pommel the other day also the forearm is shaping up too. I finally decided what the side plates should look like and made them from paper and glued them to the 1018 plate steel. I was able to mill both sides of the wood stock and clean the edges up with sharp chisels. I need to decide where the mounting holes need to be next.

That stock is really starting to take shape Bruce! This is like watching an action movie in slo mo... I can't wait for the next installment.

This is good stuff.
I am curious about that small bandsaw table. Looks like you are using it often. Do you have a bigger one also or do you use the small one all the time? Thanks.
PS:That small table has been on my todo list forever.:(

Hi Patrice,
The table is small so I can leave it on all the time and use the saw in vertical and horizontal positions. I have the big one that came with the saw but have never used it because it needs to be removed for horizontal cuts. This one is just large enough to do both well. I also made a small table for my little 4x6 metal bandsaw.

Oh, ya the Golden Hind is a much better fit for a piece such as this. Maybe Bruce will come up with a Chinese type cut n shoot one day. Dragons would work quite well with something like that also.

I just have a thing about real history. Kinda like Columbus discovered America. The others who had just never bothered to tell everyone else about it. LOL.

Kind of like all the natives in the Americas ancestors came over on the Bering Sea land bridge. With people managing to get to most of the islands in the South Pacific, wouldn't you think some of them just might have ran into something as big as South America?

More recent evidence has some ocean Kayaking & perhaps walking their way across/next to the frozen land bridge and down from Asia on to the N. America Continent and further down as well as from the European side.

Yes, Peoples small boat hopping from N. Europe by way of Iceland/Greenland area etc during the last and maybe even previous ice age, then drifting down and into modern day Canada the USA and into Central & S. America.

Bruce,
If you are taking suggestions for a name for this fine beauty?

Edward Teach may of had a similar type Flint or wheel lock Pistol with Bayonet.

You might name this beauty, "Queen Anne's Revenge" ?? Or Back to Sir Francis Drake,

"Drake's Dragoon" ? which would be my favorite. Since The Dragoon was one of the names the Spanish called him.

Keep up the beautiful and interesting Cut & Shoot work!

Laurence

Bruce I'm curious how you cleaned up the inside curve of the cutout for the dragon in the side plate. Did you use your Foredom hand piece? And if so, how do you keep a sharp line at the 'bottom' of the cutout? These are the important touches that set the pro's work apart from ... me. :)

Laurence, Yes I looking for a name for this one. It was/is a horsemans axe but the pirate gig sounds good too. It can go either way. Run some more names and history past us here, something will scream out I,m positive.

Hi Dave, I actually haven't cleaned that arc up yet as I may need to move it back some more if the dragon can't gain enough clearance with a wick in its mouth. The powder box lid may flick the ash off and if it falls into the open flash pan it will discharge the barrel. I plan to use any method necessary but a dremel with a fresh sanding drum will get most of the tool marks and an engraving bit to sharpen the bottom. I,m almost ready to fire up my GRS Gravermax. I ordered an engraving block yesterday.

Well, If I can throw something a different way towards Vlad Tempest, (please bear with me with history, as my brain aint exactly, all there), but what I was recalling was that Ole Vlad, aka Vlad the Impailer, aka Count Drakool, aka, yet again, Count Dracula, which if I recall correctly, went by Drago, or and this is how it ties into this entire thing, actually means, "The Dragon", which sorta kinda goes with the Dragon part of your incredible work. Unfortunately they didn't have guns back then, well not that I remember reading the "Historian", which was a pretty awesome book from what I recall. Just my .02 cents, on the naming ideas, I don't think it will be easy to name, no matter, it will be totally AWESOME!!! Beyond belief! Rex

Thanks Rex.
I do like the name Drako. Queen Annes Revenge is still at the top of the list but the list is so small I'm still open. Keep talking my friend.

BTW I'm in Montana chasing antelope and thats why its been quiet here.

Bruce,
Some more mythical Dragon names"
ABRAXAS
FALKOR
LADON
SAPHIRA (with green saphire eyes)

and of course my all time favorite, PUFF The Magic Dragon...I'm just sayin'...

Steve

Thanks Rex.

Do you mean, "In Montana chasing Antelope, are you on foot?" I know your like this amazing Dude when it comes to knifemaking and the incredible things you do with steel, but I'm thinking that the 'Lopes' might have a little more magic, in their element!

OK kidding aside, I know your not on foot, well, at least not actually chasing them down. I do know a lot of the areas open to hunting out that way is BLM land and do not allow motorized anything on the property. Horses, Mules, etc., are usually the main form of transportation. After that, it is on foot for many miles, that is unless ya got a watering hole with a blind set up, I hope your taking video!!!! That would be awesome to see you arrow one. Assuming your not using a black powder rifle that you built, which again would still be awesome to see a video of! Keep us posted on the hunt, on this thread if that's Ok with the Mods!
Hope your having a blast buddy, Rex

Name it "Steve".

In reality, I think Drako or Drago are the most naturally-fitting names...

Ya know Steve aint bad, but just think about how menacing Janik would be!?!?! It would strike fear into the hearts of children everywhere, parents would replace the Boogeyman with, The Janik! Like, "be good or the Janik will getcha!" Ok, I'm getting a little spooked now myself, like I may have made the Janik angry....
Oh Janik, do know it was meant in the most respectful way, k?
I know your a sport, and a pretty great guy, so I can mess with you a little bit, I just hope I haven't used up my quota of messin' with Janik!
Rex

I was thinking more like the JANIK-ATOR,
Kinda like a fat Polish Terminator with two bad knees.

You just keep them Raspberry preserves comin in on a regular basis and I won't have to hide under your bed.

SORRY to HIJACK your thread, Bruce.
Please carry on with the lovely Knife/Gun segment of our program.
