matching knife and cutting board

Scott, Great find. Nice looking combo!!

The wood appears to be Curly Ambrosia Maple. The dark areas are caused bu burrowing bugs that eat at the tree as its growing.

I may be wrong here. But thats what it looks like to me. The first thing I thought was spalted maple. Then after looking a little closer I think its Ambrosia maple. Beautiful stuff ans you very well know!

God Bless

Scott,
Maybe fill those holes with white glue? I won't use Ambrosia for a cutting board, The holes can harbor food and bacteria, Great idea, I just would find a wood without holes and a fairly tight grain.

Laurence,
the holes are small enough that the varnish filled and sealed them. most folks I know like a fancy cutting board to display or maybe serve on, but would rather cut on something plastic. on my boards, the "prettiest" side gets varathane, the back gets "Scott's Secret Kitchen Wood Oil" otherwise known as mineral oil,USP.

thanks Laurence. wanna buy some "Secret Kitchen Wood Oil"? before I knew it plain mineral oil, I once spent $8 for a 2oz bottle. Now I buy "Mineral Oil,USP" 16 oz for about $5.

Yeah, Mineral oil only.
I have to tell people not to use Olive oil or any other natural oil on their cutting boards.
If it turns rancid it can make you poop like a duck with severe gastric pains!
