Making friction folders cool again

Cool! Where is the view of the back of the knife, or half open. I always like to see how different makers handle the hold-down!!

Thanks for that view Chris, looks like you did a good job!!

Thanks for that view.

I have designed a few of the more modern friction folders and used the pin you have at top right of this pic to be a stop for fully open as well as a stop for fully closed!! That means it has to be precisely placed so it works for both positions, off of the pivot!! The first one I did I must have said every four letter word there is, you know like,...……. love, show, cuss, form, and you thought they were bad didn't you!!

I like that one! Did you make a sheath for it???

I did not make a sheath but that is a good idea. I would like to see pictures of some of your friction folders too if you dont mind.

I will try to show some pics! OK that is the folder that disappeared into space somewhere when I was downloading from Photobucket after their crap earlier this year. However their is one of the first primitive I ever built on this forum if I can find it!

EDIT: Ok found it! https://knifedogs.com/threads/friction-folders.25040/

It was the absolute first one I ever built and the sheath is rawhide, neck style. On some of the newer ones I made belt sheaths!!

Man, the antler idea is cool. I use the stop pin for open and closed just the way you do. For me it is easier to do it that way and I like using a small spacer to keep the weight down.

I use a stop pin on the modern version of friction folder.

To try and keep in the time period that the primitive friction folder is suppose to represent, they did not use stops. Or not that I have seen in a couple of examples I have seen. In the open position the top bar of the folder was used as the stop and in the closed position, I created a kick, (refer to blow up below). Just like you have on a slipjoint pocket knife!
That one was done with steel pins. Back in the day that would have been about all that was used. Most folks think brass for pins but brass was not used till in the late 1800's and brass was not to become common place till the early1900's!!

I want to try to build one but I couldn't find any information other than a couple of videos on YouTube.

OK you asked for info on friction folders, not sure if any of these links are good or not! All I can say is to try them!

OK they all appear to be dead links for some reason. Sorry this list is old. Try Britishblades, com That is all they can carry over there, so they talk a lot about them!!

Here is a link to some pics.

OK so I did a little research and appears britishblades.com may have went down in 2016 and was never re-done. Do a search for friction folders and their is still a lot of info out there!

I have agreed to make a small sheepsfoot friction folder for a customer. If you want me to I will do a kind of step by step and post it. I draw all of my folding knives out and make scale templates so I will also email you the templates if you wish. Believe me I am no expert but I have made several of these and should be able to help you through just let me know.

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!!

Ok. I will just add it here. It will be the weekend before I get to start the build so I can try to draw the knife out and email it to you so you can follow along. PM me your email when you get a second.

I have enjoyed watching this thread. Nice work, Chris!

I built lots of these many moons ago. Might even have a couple left. ??
