A friend if mine gave me a big peice of Latigo leather 7 or 8 oz. It is beautiful, but can it be formed like you can with veg tanned leather? I sure would love to use it for sheaths. Thanks, Duncan
Sadly, not a good substitute for good ol'veg-tan.Some latigo is veg-tan and some is chrome tanned which is bad for knives. It is used mainly in harness and tack, and is soft, dosen't tool, mold, or accept dye very well.Sorry.Dave
Same here, tried latigo from Tandy since I could get large scraps. It doesn't form for crap and relaxes on its own over time so it makes a very loose sheath. However, I did make a Mexican style sheath with it that uses a mechanical lock rather than formed for retention and it works very well for that. I also can't get it to burnish at all. Good luck!
