Im working on a hatchet design, and have a large quantity of 5160, wanted to make the inner "core: intigral witht eh handle but wanted to buld up mass in the head. Would forge welding 2 sides to the blade be a viable option? I know 5160 isnt the best application for this, since it is particular to weld, but ive successfully used it in damascus before. Just curious.

God Bless
Mike

Hi Mike!

You can always give it a go, but if you insist on using 5160, your odds for success decrease greatly. I know you've heard me say many times...."5160 does not play well with others." If your welding technique is "just right" it CAN work, but if it were me, I wouldn't do it. It's kind of like sticking your finger in a light socket....the best chance you have is 50/50.

I have had luck with sanmai using 5160 and some good folded wrought iron . Some good stuff . it will almost stick to anything . But it ain't easy
