Knife Porn!

Hi folks!
A little while ago, Dan Bergevin, (Capitalized Living is his handle here) contacted me to see if I'd be willing and able to help him with a cool project he dreamt up.

I figured the best way to help, would be to post up a thread here, with the hopes that primarily knife makers and photographers might take an interest and send Dan a photo or two.

It is important to keep in mind that whatever photos are submitted MUST have the photographer's permission in order to be accepted. Additionally, please ensure that the cutler's name is included in the submission.

Please take note, that this is not a commercial endeavour. No one is benefitting financially from this project. My feeling is that it can be used not just for us custom cutlery fetishists to geek out on, but also as a way to expose people who might know nothing of custom cutlery to it. Additionally, it is a good opportunity for cutlers to expose their work on a platform that demands no financial investment at all- a platform which may extend far beyond the reach of forums and other more specialized outlets.

Submissions go to dan@danbergevin.com

Knife porn. We browse for it on our phones and computers, we stash it on our hard drives, and we sneak peeks at it when we're supposed to be working. So why not make a knife porn book?

The idea is to produce an ebook containing 100 images of custom knives, ranging from drop-dead gorgeous to downright nasty. That's right, this ebook will have both softcore and hardcore sections, showcasing the beautiful and the dirty in one place.

Here's the best part: It will be ad free, article free, and available for free from Amazon Kindle. Kindle distribution allows for excellent viewing on a variety of devices using the free Kindle App. It also allows the ebook to reside on Amazon.com where it can be easily found and downloaded from most places on Earth.

What I hope to accomplish with this ebook is to break new ground in knife publications and give us all something awesome to check out. I obviously have no financial incentives, but I do have the selfish motive of wanting to add this particular project to my list of publications (if you're curious, see danbergevin.com for my portfolio).

And here is where you come in. We need you to help us with the content. So if you have some knife porn of your own that you would like to share with the world, we would love to see it. Here are the submission guidelines:

1. Custom knives only. No production or midtech knives please.
2. The knife must be fully in frame, in focus, unobstructed, and shown in good lighting.

3. Picture must be landscape orientation.
4. Smaller pictures (less than 8.5" x 11") should be 300 dpi or higher. Larger pictures (more than 8.5" x 11") should be 200 dpi or higher.
5. Submissions for the softcore section should present relatively blemish free knives.
6. Submissions for the hardcore section should show either knife usage (dressing game) or signs of age and use (rust or staining, damaged edge, etc). The more beat up the knife looks, the better! (Note: No images of human violence will be accepted.)
7. Submissions must include the maker and photographer credits. If the photo is from another party, we need that party's permission prior to use. If the credits aren't on the image itself, we will add them for you.

We are looking for 50 softcore and 50 hardcore pictures.

Here are a couple examples we put together...

this could be a great opportunity for knife makers and hobbyist photographers alike. No financial investment whatsoever, and a potentially far greater reach than any of the forums we enthusiasts use. Imagine pulling out your iphone or whatever and showing your non knifenut buddies a photo with your name on it in an ebook.
It's pretty cool, and I really hope that some of you consider submitting one or two photos.

Great idea many could use the free publicity. mine are still too crude and rough to attempt this.

I think group shots would be fine, probably moreso if all the knives are made by the same dude.

Bruce, that's great!

I have a feeling that some folks might think that there are strings attached, and they might be reticent to submit a contribution. There is no ulterior motive; this project is simply to put something of quality out there for people to freely enjoy!

Submissions are trickling in, but most are of the 'softcore' variety. Dan would like some more 'in use' ie 'hardcore' photos, so if you have any, fire away!
