Kiln not getting as hot as it used to.

Hey guys, I have a 24" Sugar Creek electric kiln. I turned it on to do H/T a couple of blades and it wouldn't get hotter than 1870 F. It used to go up to 1950-1975 with no problem. Is this the first sign of failing coils/heating elements or could it be the thermocouple? Any thoughts or info. will be appreciated.

If it took what seemed like a long time to reach th 1870F you mentioned, then it's likely the element(s). If the ramp speed was similar to what you're used to seeing, then likely the thermocouple. It's rare, but I've seen instances where both the element(s) and the thermocouple required replacing.

Something I think is a good "rule of thumb", is to replace both element(s) and thermocouple at the same time. I started doing that after having to replace an element, then having to replace the thermocouple shortly there after.

Thanks Ed, it took WAY longer than usual just to get to 1870. The TC is only about 3-4 months old. I think I'll order a new set of coils from Tracy. Thanks again Ed.

Edited to add; Is there any break-in procedure for new coils?
