Take a look at the picture below. The pic has been resized and cropped so as not to infringe on the knives owner!

I am seeing this style of handle a lot now and I would like to know how to refer to it when describing a knife that I might make with this, type of handle!

So far only thing I can come with is "this knife has a handle, made of Spalted Ironwood, with a kicK down, flared heel, style handle"!! That is kind of a mouthful and so wondering is their a name to this style of handle????

Its called a Moran style handle. There are many more modern variations of it but they all stemmed from that.

Thank you very much John. I figured someone out there had to recognize it and could tell me the name!!

Just Googled Moran knives and up pops,

The more I read about him the more I realize his influence in knives I have seen!

Quotes from Blade Magazine:

It's easy to pick a Moran knife out from a crowd. Moran knives are said to have "face." The long clip point and the ergonomic handle are two classic Moran features.

Bill Moran and damascus are the peanut butter and jelly of the knife world. Here's an all-damascus Moran piece showing why, submitted by BLADE reader Eugene Tseng.

You know I remember the name Bill Moran but, did not realize, the influence he had on knife making. I have spent the evening reading and looking at pics. It appears that a lot of what you see in knives today, must be attributed to his influence. He truly was a master!! I am glad that I finally asked the question about the handle!!!! Here is a link to the Moran Museum! https://www.williammoranmuseum.com/

I have some of his videos that are, the last I looked, available from the ABS store. One deals with handles.

Doug what is the ABS store? I googled ABS store and what popped up has nothing to do with knife making!! OK looked at this again and it became obvious what the initials stood for!! http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ Thanks for the heads up!!

Don, again I did not realize the influence William/Bill Moran had on knife making. Everything I see and like about knives was his style. I am reading and looking at everything I can find! However I got to do the short version, 80 more years would put me in around 140 and don't think I will make it that long!!

I truly love that desert ironwood and had been callling my handles of that shape flared butt handles so it is goo to know the correct term to not ony better describe them but to acknowledge Bills influence on knifemaking.
Thanks for the Q and A
