OK Dogs, so here is the first knife that I am working on. It is 3/16" O1. Your input or observations would be appreciated. Thanks!
Jerry

Also the first time I was able to load pictures!! Woo Hoo! Success!

Good looking knife! I'm sure you've got more to do, but I'd get that edge thinned down a good bit more.

Thanks,
I need to heat treat and am trying to figure out how I'm going to accomplish that. I thought I had someone who was going to heat treat but that fell through. Should I just buy a torch and some oil and go for it? Should I send it out? Most guys won't bother with O1.

JAG could you get a shot of the top (shine ) of the knife. Your grind line looks clean but how far up did you take it?

here you go:

Too much?

JAG to me you did go too high but that can be fixed. You have made an angle that could be weak and possible break. But I am sure you could blend it in and give it a smoother angle. But before you do anything because of what I have said. Please wait till the more experienced makers look. I could be seeing this all wrong. Like I said your lines are very crisp and clean. It is a great start. Can't wait for more pics all the way till it is complete.

nice work !

think JKR is right.

looks like you did go a little bit too high.

on the other hand if you like it that way and it doesn´t bother you there is nothing wrong with it.

but the edge looks too thick for O1

thinned down to 0.04" or less would do

depending on what you are planning to use it for

otherwise you could end up with a way too thick and wide edge

Thanks guys! Al, the blade has not been heat treated, should I bring the edge thinner before heat treat? Also, the close up picture of the edge looks like it curves (the grind) but in fact it is flat from the edge to the top. Also, should I drill some more holes in the handle to reduce the weight? Thanks!

FYI, if you are going to send it out, or if you have a reasonable means of evenly heating the blade for hardening, I would go ahead and thin that edge. I take most all of my knives to .03" prior to heat treating. If your grinding is fairly even, you will be fine. If you're worried, leave it a bit thicker (.04" as suggested). However, you'll need to thin it down after heat treatment.

And definitely drill any extra holes prior to heat treating. Guessing, I'd say it could use a little balancing by lightening up the handle. Drill some holes in an even pattern and ream the edges.

There are some people who commercially heat treat oil hardening steels...I see if I can remember the names.

Thanks Nathan, I will drill some holes in the handle and thin the blade some more. If you come up with those names where I can send for heat treating let me know.I will post more pics after I make the adjustments. Thanks all!

Thanks BJ!
OK, so I took the advice and drilled some holes in the handle as well as fixing the blade so the grind does not go all the way up. I also thinned the blade out.
Let me know what you think! Thanks,
Jerry
