How would you go about getting one?
Like 2"x4"x4"

Would you forge weld flat bar? Is there a place that sells small blocks?
 
Youre correct that is pricey.
I wonder if forge welding flatbar would be cheaper by much.

For guards, I've bought 416 SS in a round or octagonal bar on ebay before at a cheap price. Forge it into flat bar. If you're talking 300 series SS that's easier to find in different sizes. Or are you thinking blade steel?
