Just finished this up today. 1084, 7.5" OAL, 3-1/8" blade with black micarta pins and stainless lanyard tube. I'm still applying Tung oil to the walnut to build up a better sheen.
Thanks guys. This piece of stabilized walnut burl was beautiful. The grain looks nice in the photo but is even more striking in hand.
I've been using black micarta pins in several knives and really like using it.
Does anyone know if micarta pins can be had in different colors other than black or brown. I've done some searches but haven't found any.
McMaster Carr is where I go to "play"....the terms garolite, micarta, phenolic, and plastic laminates are pretty much interchangeable. Some plastics are suitable for pins....IF THEY ARE GLASS FILLED. The shear strength of any plastic is greatly improved withe fiberglass added. Micarta is a phenolic resin with addition of either paper or canvas...also a good "alloy" for the resin/plastic. Nylon with added kevlar is strong also. Garolite means a composite resin with fiber added. G10 is resin with fiberglass. When they say the color is "yellow" they mean that greenish circuit board color which is G10. I love this color and want to make handles from it some day...
Anyway use common sense. McMaster provides a lot of description of properties. I would not use plain nylon or abs etc that is not rated "moisture resistant" the fact that they offer it meant that the plain jane is hydroscopic aand maybe not suitable for pins.
Most of this stuff is amazingly cheap...until you get to carbon fiber...lol.
The colors here are going to be black, brown, off-white (ivory), yellow (g10 looking). That's rod. I have some red stuff that you have to turn out of sheet...I haven't done it yet so don't know how it performs. I have done tons of g10 and micarta machining...wear good masks when working. Fiberglass particulate is hard on the ol' breath sacs...
Design the same I use on some of my knives lately but your knife looks so much better than mine. I did not start making knifes until my mid to late '70's and unable to care for my cattle. Now I am so forgetful I'll mess up somewhere on nearly every knife. I enjoy it so much I'll keep trying and giving them away. Very good work, post more. THANKS
