how to clean up the rust without grinding

Sandblasting's good, but messy. For smaller stuff, a wire brush (on a drill is even better) works wonders. For stubborn rust, try a rust converter, it chemically changes the rust into a paintable surface. Solvents can help, but often you'll still need some scrubbing afterwards.

Sandblasting's good
I agree and yes, it's a dirty job. There's usually a limit on size in the blast cabinet. Electrolysis can be scaled to match whatever the need, like the mower deck that I cleaned that way. It does require scrubbing the black gunk off for final finish.

I was thinking sand blast because the 15n20 saw blade that I have has light rust in areas and some smaller areas that look deeper.....my thoughts that if grinding the area i have to grind to below the deepest pits and with blasting I can just clean the deeper spots with abrasive and still be able to get a good weld for my damascus laminations.....the blade was stored inside a building for years but developed surface rust from condensation....I could wire brush with side grinder to quickly knock off the lighter areas and blast any deeper areas.....I usually will use about 4 feet of the blade at a time when preparing billets

Has anyone used the liquid rust remover?? I have also tried Vinegar to some success, but don't forget it in the Vinegar (don't ask me how I know! LOL!!)
